In the 1920s, the RSPCA proposed a memorial to commemorate the animals that had served in the First World War. The Animal War Memorial Dispensary Animal War Memorial Dispensary, Cambridge Avenue, Kilburn, London, opened November 1932.© Historic England. Here are 8 memorials that commemorate the history of animal contribution to the war effort. Many animals – goats, a fox, monkeys, a pig, a bear, mice, dogs and cats – were kept as pets and mascots by troops and on ships, raising morale and providing comfort during the terrible hardships of war. On the home front, circus elephants were commandeered for agriculture and haulage. Canaries and mice were employed to give early warning of toxic fumes when troops were tunnelling underground. Dogs carried messages and laid telephone wires. Messenger pigeons played a vital role in communications, relaying messages from the front line to headquarters more reliably than telephone or radio.

Tens of thousands of horses and camels were used by cavalry units. They hauled food, equipment, ammunition and other supplies for the troops. They died in their hundreds of thousands.Īn estimated six million horses and mules were engaged by the combatants. In addition to this modern technology, millions of animals were used both in warfare and on the home front. I'd love to hear from anyone with suggestions of groups or projects working with young people who might be struggling to get their own instrument. The First World War saw the development of industrialised mechanised warfare – machine guns, tanks, and aeroplanes. James is an amazing musician who you should all watch out for! We also worked together for a youth music project for many years and share the same passion for encouraging young people through music. When it came to recording 'Dreams' I was lucky enough to have a very special and talented friend, James Lane add lead guitar and vocals to the track. Lyndon also added some vocals onto the final recording :) We both really feel that we'd like it to be used in a way that benefits others. 'Heartbeat' is a song I wrote for my wonderful husband when we first got together. I'll keep my website ( and Facebook profile and page updated on how this all goes.

You can listen to 'Heartbeat' and 'Dreams' for free at and if you'd like to support my fundraising, you can also buy and download the tracks from this page. For now, this feels like a good way that I can encourage and support young people through music.

Long term, I hope to set up another youth music project and am in the dreaming stages of imagining some future work. I promise that all of the income I generate through selling these tracks over the next year will go towards buying musical instruments and then distributing these through schools, community and youth groups, charities and other projects working with those young people who might benefit from being given an instrument. I'd just love the opportunity to share that wonderful experience with other young people who aren't in the same position. I'm so grateful for that and for the way it has shaped my life. Like many others, I was fortunate enough to have been able to get my first guitar as a teenager. I'm making a double release of two of my tracks, 'Heartbeat' and 'Dreams' with the hope that I can raise funds to buy instruments for young people who might not otherwise have access to them. Now is the perfect opportunity for me to contribute more to what I believe so greatly in. Music is such an incredible tool for uniting people, releasing emotions and creativity, building confidence, inspiring others and so much more. I have seen first hand the amazing experiences and opportunities created by enabling young people to learn and make music. As some of you may know, I've had the pleasure of working with young people and music for a good while and am very passionate about the value of music in our lives today.
